Christchurch and the Banks Peninsula

In Christchurch we were very kindly housed and fed by Andy and Kay from Natural High again, whilst there we felt our first earthquake/aftershock, a 3.5 apparently. We were given use of the bikes for a few more days so the following day we set out along the Little River Rail Trail to the most fantastic camp site - all quite eco with composting toilets, hot showers pretty much in the open air and a wooded glade furnished with old chairs and lampshades hanging from the trees. The next day was the route along the Summit Road, following the rim of the now extinct volcano. This was pretty constant hill climbing until the final epic downhill into Akaroa, but the weather was lovely and the views fab. Akaroa is a lovely old French colony, the only one in NZ, lots of nice shops and cafes and a cokkery school. Also our coldest night so far with a star filled sky and a heavy frost.
